Yes, research proves breastfeeding is the most beneficial practice for optimal health, physical development, IQ and cognitive development of baby and mother. But what are the best ways to keep up your milk supply and baby’s interest while you’re On the Road breastfeeding around the world? These tips will help while you are traveling domestically, too.

Here are some statistics on breastfeeding around the world. As you can see, current research shows Americans are on par with other like nations with the highest percentage of mothers breastfeeding their kids from birth through six months. Yay! What a great accomplishment!

Here are some ways I have discovered for continuing to keep up your PBM (“Positive Booby Mojo”) while you are travelling the world (or domestically, for that matter).

1.  Grab a portable, comfortable nursing cover and pack it in a convenient place so it will be easy to reach wherever, whenever. We love, love, love the DRIA cover, and use it on a daily basis. It’s comfortable, portable, breathable and fashionable – all-in-one. We even drape it over the stroller or our Ergo Carrier to help Baby Mermaid fall asleep if we’re out and about during her naptimes.

2. Make sure you are eating healthy foods and drinking plenty of water to keep up your milk supply while away from home. Any nursing momma knows milk supply wanes with dehydration or lack of green leafy veggies and other pro-milk foods. Be sure you are doing your best to consume the best foods, and your milk supply will not be hindered. If you fall off the wagon and can’t eat the healthiest foods one day, don’t get discouraged. Simply make it a priority to eat healthy pro-milk foods the following day.

3. Keep baby’s “at-home” eat-play-sleep schedule as much as possible. By doing this, you’ll ensure as little disruption to both baby’s schedule and your milk supply as possible. Logical, right? Tough to follow in practice – especially with time zone shifts or family/friend visits. We do our best to schedule things in advance as much as possible, and also have people come to us at a fixed venue rather than travel about too much. This ensures we may put baby down for a nap and continue to visit if it becomes necessary.

4. Bring your breast pump. If your baby and your schedules do not coincide, your milk supply may fall off a bit. In order to preserve your supply and maintain baby’s desire to nurse, bring along a breast pump. In the event of a missed or slept-through feeding due to schedule shifts, you assure baby will have mommy milk.

Hope these tips help you as you prepare for your travels! What other great tips do you have for breastfeeding around the globe?
